Upcountry + North Shore Maui Guide

The fertile soil of this island offered me a childhood filled with nature, freedom, and mysticism. This past winter I was fortunate enough to spend a month back on the island to lead a yoga retreat, visit home, reconnect and recharge. It was exactly what I needed to bounce back into my busy New York City life filled with teaching yoga, writing and performing. Here are a few of my favorite spots that I picked just for you in hopes that you too will have the chance to connect with this potent magic!

Kombucha Maui At any given time of the day you can find locals putting back pints of kombucha here. Highlighting local ingredients, there is always a rotation of fresh flavors on tap. If kombucha is not your thing, have some fresh coconut water from the tap or grab a bite from their all vegan menu. You cannot go wrong here, everything is delicious. Get your ‘booch on.

Maui Coffee Roasters This should be your first and last stop on Maui. Close to theairport, super funky and the best place to grab an iced coffee upon arrival and stock up on freshly roasted Kona coffee to take home.

Paia Bay Coffee Located smack dab in the center of Paia Town but tucked awayfrom the shops and walking traffic, this lush garden coffee shop feels like a secret spot. Press pause, sit outside and enjoy a coffee, tea or wine. They have happy hour daily and live music often.

Farmer’s Market Maui Open Saturday mornings early till midday. Stock up on local produce, fresh caught fish, homemade miso, pints of turmeric juice, coconut kefir, nut cheeses, breadfruit, and fresh coconuts. CAP tip: drink the fresh coconut water then take it back to the stand where they will crack the coconut open so you can enjoy the meat! Come hungry, grab a coffee, take a turmeric shot and stroll the stands, truly a celebration of all the local goodies Maui has to offer.

Café Des Amis Famous for their crepes (they offer gluten-free crepes made frombuckwheat) but the secret here is the curry. Grab a seat outside and if you're luckythere will be live music. Also, if you are someone who participates in happy hour don’t pass on their Lilikoi Margarita.

Paia Bowls Acai bowls and smoothies galore with superfood add on to boot. Go for breakfast or a post surf sesh refuel.

Mana Foods Is it weird that one of my favorite parts of traveling is finding the bestlocal health food store? Well, this is it.

Lumeria A place to stay, to practice, to retreat… an oasis of tranquility. Book a room or just book a massage, you’ll be grateful you took the time to check out this magical place.Olinda Forest When you think of Hawaii you think of the beach and waterfalls, right? I urge you to carve out time to explore the forest.

Driftwood A highly curated lifestyle boutique that sings beach vibes and carriesbrands like Moon Juice (in case you run out while you are on the island).Puka Puka This hybrid spot, both exhibition space and shop, bestow reverence toobjects that honor the mystical meanderings of island life while also forging forth with an eye for elevated island sartorial splendor.

Hawaii Flora + Fauna The gift of a lei is a ritual that honors moments oftranscendence, change and transformation such as arrivals, departures, tributes and celebrations. Lauren Shearer began Hawaii Flora + Fauna with the vision to restore this tradition with a modern eye and conscious choice in materials. She forages plants, uses found objects, invasive species and recycled flowers. Her studio is in Hali’imaile and visits are currently by appointment only.

Oshan Essentials Pure, organic, wild crafted, and ethically sourced botanicals blends. I never want to be without the Bright Body Polish again, it is a sunshine scrub in a jar.
