Hydrosols 101

One of our favorite ways to help cool off the skin and refresh the senses during these last days of summer is with a hydrosol. In its most basic form, a hydrosol is the steam distillation of floral and plant material. They are similar to essential oils, but much less concentrated, therefore much safer to use more frequently and directly on the skin of the face.

You’ve seen Rose Water and Lavender Water hydrosols at your local health food store, but since the rise of high performance natural skin care, hydrosols now combine more than just floral waters. Ingredients like seaweed, hyaluronic acid and aloe are now being blended with these floral bases to create really special, really active toners. The function of these hydrosols (called toners in some cases) are to hydrate, tighten, and balance the pH levels of the skin.

The delivery system varies for these products; sprays are especially lovely to mist at any time of the day for that great refreshing sensation. Another way, more suited for nighttime use, is with a pump, which is used by either pumping the liquid onto a cotton pad and swiped across the face, or pumped directly into the hand and massaged into the skin (you can also pump it into the hand with a few drops of your nighttime oil to create a fresh serum, we call it a “skin cocktail”).

Pay attention to what your skin needs at that moment, but when in doubt, let the power of scent guide you in which toner to choose for your skin.

We’ve picked a few of our favorites to get you started:

Shiva Rose Radiant Rosewater: Smells like fresh roses and imparts a beautiful glow to the complexion. Great for dry/mature skin.

In Fiore Vitale Toning Floral Essence: A potent and astringent toning option, we love this for more oily or congested skin, or dull dry skin that needs a boost.

Hannes Dottir Mineral Mist: Super mineralizing and moisturizing for all you sun kissed beach lovers.

May Lindstrom Jasmine Garden: It’s a fact; it’s impossible to spray this anywhere without turning people’s heads. Smells like absolute heaven and has tons of powerhouse ingredients, including silver, for any skin type.

Mun No. 11 Anarose Rejuvenating Rose Toner: A Japanese style toner to be swiped across the skin before applying your oil, this lovely blend has salicylic acid to keep your skin clear and balanced.

Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence: Our first love, this hydrosol still stands as one of our favorites. The superhero ingredient in this beautiful mist is Bioidentical Hyaluronic Acid, which helps hold moisture in the skin. We also love how it sets makeup and makes skin feel toned and tight. Perfection!
