Behind Closed Doors: Katie Mason

We all love a peek into what others are using on their skin, especially that of an esthetician, and up today is our own brilliant Katie Mason. With a routine that focuses on layering and nurturing, you can expect to find oils, masks and massage. Also expect to find pancakes, pilates and the healing power of touch. Because when you pair joy with products, you often reveal the skin you've been wanting all along.

What do you keep in your cabinet to keep your skin feeling its best?

I turn to the Micronutrient + Hydro Mask from Kristina Holey and Marie Veronique. When my skin is particularly dry and lackluster, I sleep overnight in this mask to repair, restore and rejuvenate my skin.

What are important practices for healthy skin; these can be physical, mental, products, anything you think is beneficial to the state of your skin.

It’s no secret that exercise and a balanced diet are two crucial components of healthy skin. For me, inversions whether in yoga or pilates, make my skin glow throughout the day. Beyond that, find consistency in your daily skin routine in order to maintain its clear and natural beauty throughout the year.

What do you love about skincare? How did you get started in this career?

I am inspired by the power of touch and the ability to put someone at ease for a portion of their day. It is a gift to be able to ground someone, to be truly present for that treatment, and to know that I am making a difference in their lives. I love human connection and I got started in this career when I realized that I could attain it and witness positive transformations on a daily basis.

What can someone expect from you during a treatment at CAP?

While on my table you can expect to get a thoroughly nuanced treatment that is meaningful for your skin’s current condition. Like all facials at CAP, there is an emphasis on massage. You will feel your stress dissipate as I sculpt the contours of your face, neck and décolleté. After your treatment I will provide you with detailed recommendations and protocols for home care to establish consistent and healthy practices.

What have you found to be most effective for you and your skin?

Oil cleansing has been instrumental in keeping my skin calm since I have rosacea. Pure + EO Free Oil Cleanser from Kristina Holey and Marie Veronique is my favorite one. It has safflower and sunflower oils in it to decongest my pores while pre and probiotics help support and maintain my barrier function.

What else do you love doing?

I love the quiet yet intense focus of Pilates. I love riding bikes with my husband, listening to WFMU and eating buckwheat pancakes with my 2 year old son.
