Behind Closed Doors: Colleen Herman

With a deep passion to create, artist Colleen Herman, approaches all of life like a blank canvas. Her deep reverence for art and the power it holds is felt in her very alive and fully awake paintings. This passion spills over into the more mundane tasks of the day: the meals she prepares, how she moves her body and the skincare practitioners she keeps on speed dial. And you can be sure that Kristina Holey and Marie Veronique sit at the top of that list. Consider this a studio visit of inspiration.

Consistency is key.

Do you have a favorite ritual?

I love making coffee for my man - I'm on a break from coffees right now, but love preparing the percolator and brewing so it's ready for him when he gets up

What music do you play at home?

At home we listen to a lot of fip radio (thank you Lauren Gerrie!) It's eclectic and random - which I love.

In studio, Megan Fisher is on repeat - she's a super talented composer and we're cooking up something together.

Who or what inspires you?

My nieces and nephews inspire me! The strong mamas and women in my orbit who go to great lengths to make beautiful lives for themselves and their families. Nature always - flowers that pop up all over, year after year - reminding us of seasonal cycles. And poetry.

What other practices do you have that support you feeling your best?

Bike rides to studio

Long walks with friends

Farmers Market as often as possible

and good sex

What's always on your nightstand?

I have a little stack of books on the floor next to my bed --- Eileen Myles (poetry), Isabelle Graw (art criticism), Geeta Iyengar (Yoga Gem for Women), Zadie Smith (Intimations). Right now I'm into Olivia Laing's collection of essays in Funny Weather.

Favorite products from CAP?

Everyday Oil forever and ever

How do you end your day?

I typically end the day with the bike ride back to the city and some dinner with friends. I'm grateful so many favorite spots survived this past year and am a happy patron, ensuring they stay a long time. Caravan of Dreams, The Odeon, Il Buco Alimentari, Atla, Bacaro, and Yellow Rose are in heavy rotation.
