Behind Closed Doors: Alexandra Zullo

As you probably know, we're voyeurs at heart. We love the chance to peek inside someone's fridge or better still, their bathroom cabinet. Today we turn to our very own, Alexandra Zullo, the elegant and discerning manager of our flagship New York City store. It's safe to say Alexandra knows more about the products that line our shelves than virtually anyone and she spends a significant amount of time navigating guests through our aisles (our favorite kind of nature walk). And since she's tried it all, we were thrilled when she invited us to discover her personal picks.

What is your skincare philosophy?

About 10 years ago I decided to make a complete switch to 100% synthetic and toxin free skincare. Back then most of the brands that make up my favorites now weren’t even available yet, but I was determined because I was appalled to learn how loosely skincare ingredients are regulated in the US. As a European, I never thought about the contents of the products I was using and just assumed they were safe. The realization came shortly after I read Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore's Dilemma which made me reconsider the quality of ingredients I was putting in my body. Looking at what I was putting on my body was just a natural progression.

Which of these products are apart of your daily routine?

A definite constant has been the Julisis Silver line, especially the cleanser. I love how quickly it takes off makeup, sunscreen and anything else that doesn’t belong without stripping my skin. I also use Kahina's Oil Cleanser 2-3 times a week to give my skin a deeper cleansing. Oil removes oil and the oil and warmth of my hands gets rid of any debris in my pores. I have been a huge fan of Marie Veronique for even longer than I have worked at CAP. I apply their Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Serum every night to boost collagen production and in the summer during the day to boost my skin’s sun protection. In the colder months I love to use Kahina’s Brightening Serum in the morning to even out my skin tone and provide hydration. I adore In Fiore’s Calme Oil Concentrate and apply that as my first layer of moisture. I can’t get enough of the beautiful scent, I look forward to it every day! My second layer is usually a cream, especially when temperatures drop below 40. I just tried Votary’s Super Seed Nutrient Cream and can’t wait for it to arrive so we can share this gem with our customers!

When I know I will be spending time in the sun, I reach for Josh Rosebrook’s Nutrient Day Cream. No sunscreen I have come across goes on as smoothly and with no white residue on the skin. In sticky summer temperatures this is all the hydration and protection I need!

On to the eyes. At night I use Kahina’s Prickly Pear Seed roller for under my eyes, during the day I like either Julisis’ Eyemulsion because it is so lightweight and perfect for under makeup, or Tata Harper’s Illuminating Eye Cream for an extra brightening effect.

I have probably tried over 20 natural deodorants and can attest that trial and error is the way to find the one that works for you. I am currently switching back and forth between Agent Nateur’s Sensitive Skin and Schmidt’s Charcoal Magnesium. I figured if it works for a NYC Ballet ballerina, it should work for me!

I have to apply body lotion or oil after every shower and during the week I usually reach for Pai’s Comfrey Body Lotion as it deeply hydrates but absorbs instantly.

I was raised by a dental hygienist so my daily dental routine is very important to me. I love Dr. Tung’s Ionic Toothbrush, it truly feels like I just had a cleaning every time. I also like that the replacement head lightens the environmental impact of my obsessive dental routine!

I would like to give a shout out to my shower items: I have been using Dr. Alkaitis’ Herbal Shampoo every day for the past two years and even though I try others, nothing smells as good and works as well for my hair and scalp. My favorite way to cleanse is with either the Pearl+ Moisturizing Luxury Soap or the Mother Dirt Cleanser, both work perfectly for my dry and eczema prone skin. I get my lymphatic system going with our dry brush every day, it only takes a few minutes but the light exfoliation and circulation boost really gets me going in the morning.

Though I don’t use a lot of makeup, I definitely have favorites that get me ready for the day. The best mascara for me is Kjaer Weis’. It doesn’t budge and creates beautifully long, defined lashes. Their foundation is also my go to. I apply it to freshly moisturized skin and it just glides on and stays put all day long. RMS Beauty revolutionized natural makeup and was the first brand I tried when I made the switch; their Master Mixer is my daily go to to wake up my eye area and the Buriti Bronzer makes me look rested and extends the feeling of summer. My all time favorite blush is Kjaer Weis’ Joyful though I have been trying Olio e Osso’s balms and love the colors and versatility!

What product do you use when your feeling ultra luxe?

I try to exfoliate on a regular basis, at least twice a week, and I usually use Marie Veronique’s Exfoliating mask because it is so effective in a very short amount of time (wash face, apply, brush teeth, rinse off, done!) I also adore Max and Me’s Wash and Mask, the high content of raw manuka honey is soothing and hydrating and when combined with the propolis, cacao and mangosteen it creates an aroma that I find positively addictive! Julisis’ Silver Mineral Mask was recommended to me by CAP esthetician Cara Peloso when I first started at CAP and I have been using it ever since. It leaves my skin clear, bright and plump.

My lips tend to be very dry so I exfoliate them with Henne’s Organics Rose Diamond Exfoliator and follow up with their lip balm V2 (which I also carry with me everywhere!).

I am very particular about smells and I love Odacité’s Greentea Lemongrass serum; the smell is so refreshing and I truly feel it makes my skin more radiant. I like to use it with the Odacité Gua Sha tool a few times a week to increase my skin’s circulation.

I often end my week with an epsom salt bath. To prep my skin I use Kahina’s Kessa Mitt to exfoliate. Instead of adding oils to the bath I recently tried applying oil to my skin before entering the bath. The heat opens the pores which provides the perfect way to absorb the oil.  For this I couldn’t resist applying Jiva Apoha’s Sukhin body oil, the aroma fills the whole room! The result is beautifully hydrated skin that just needs to be gently patted dry.
