Many people think astrology is charlatanism. They think astrologers are hacks, selling people their future. And we are, but not in the way people think.
Astrology speaks to the energy of one’s chart, a snapshot of the sky the moment we were born. Ever notice how some days – or even weeks or years – are more hectic than others? Or more serene? It’s energy, reverberating through us and everyone around us. And our bodies soak it up, whether we’re conscious of it or not.
Humans are 78% water. We’re made up of matter, just like anything else. So if the phases of the moon affect the tide, why wouldn’t they affect us?
I often explain it this way. One’s chart is like a closet. You have so many clothes available to you. And some of the articles go together, but some not so much. Some people are minimalists, others collectors. But either way, we get to choose what to put on in the morning, the way we’re going to wear that particular shirt or dress, if we’ll accessorize it, tuck it in, dress it up or down. We work with the weather, the current climate, and we decide. We can do the same thing with our natal positions and aspects. We may not like that we have a fiery moon, or a passive, yielding Sun. But we can work with it, we can harness it to our favor. And most importantly, we can find the beauty in our particular make-up, what makes us unique and then find a way to express it in its highest form. And when we do that, when we take ownership of our lives and our inner experience, we do shape our future.
And what’s more grounded, more practical than that?
The first step to learning astrology is starting with the awareness that there are no good or bad signs and there are no good or bad charts. It’s just energy. And all energy is neutral until directed. It’s up to the individual how it’s handled and expressed. In other words, it’s not the hand we’re dealt, it’s how we play our cards.
“I can’t stand Scorpios.” “You can’t date a Gemini. They’re the worst.”
Ever heard this? Or anything like it?
What we’re really saying is : I’m uncomfortable with this energy.
We have a habit of labeling others, putting them (and ourselves) into boxes. But astrology can help broaden our understanding of others, foremost by deepening our understanding of ourselves.
The second step to learning astrology is recognizing that each individual, like ourselves, is simply working with their own unique chart. And moreover, that, while we have a greater emphasis in some signs, we all contain each sign within us. Some energy is just more pronounced than others.
We’re all made up of energy and that energy needs expression. We all have strengths and weaknesses, we all experience peaks and valleys. Astrology offers us a window into our patterning and timing, so that we may harness it to the greatest effect. Nothing more and nothing less. And when we operate from this place, the world opens up.
And we may just realize we have something to learn from a Scorpio after all.
